John Mulaney is making his comeback – and embracing his new reputation – in his Netflix comedy special, John Mulaney: Baby J.

Baby J, which premiered just this week, is the comedian’s first comedy special in almost four years. Mulaney seized this opportunity to address the elephant in the room: His recent stint in rehab.

Though he doesn’t address his publicized divorce, Mulaney jokes about life after rehab as a new father. He also talks about the “star-studded” intervention held by Nick Kroll, Seth Meyers, Fred Armisen and others that directly resulted to him going away to rehab for two months.

“I am sitting there in an awful chair, crashing from cocaine. No one will let me go to the bathroom to freshen up, and the funniest people in the world are staring at me, refusing to do jokes. It was maddening!” he recalled.

Where is John Mulaney: Baby J filmed?

The routine performed in Baby J is the result of his months-long national tour, in which Mulaney performed jokes about fatherhood and his struggles with addiction. Reports from previous shows on his From Scratch tour lead us to believe the material he worked with closely resembles what we see now in Baby J.

The stand-up special was filmed during the comedian’s Boston performance at Symphony Hall this past February, where Mulaney performed three shows. The three performances were all taped live.

The comedy special was directed by Kid Gorgeous executive producer Alex Timbers. Music was also provided by David Byrne.

John Mulaney: Baby J is now streaming on Netflix. You can also catch his previous Netflix stand-ups John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous and John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid on the streaming platform, along with his kids special John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch.
