New Hulu series Saint X tells the story of a teenage girl’s tragic death on an idyllic island. Based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Alexis Schaitkin, the Hulu adaptation closely resembles The White Lotus and Big Little Lies in its handling of race relations and class.
The show’s haunting story is told across multiple timelines as it uncovers how a young woman died on a family vacation in the Caribbean. As it jumps between timelines, the series shows her surviving sister as an adult trying to learn the truth by any means possible.
This tragic show is not based on a true story, but other publications have pointed out its similarities to the case of Natalee Holloway, who disappeared at the age of 18 while on vacation in Aruba.
Where Was Saint X Filmed?
Saint X is named after the fictional Caribbean island the story takes place on. While it may not exist in real life, production for the Hulu series took place in multiple areas of the Dominican Republic, a paradisal country and frequent vacation site for tourists in the Caribbean.
“I spent about six months earlier this year working in the Dominican Republic on a show for Hulu,” executive producer Steve Pearlman said in a social media post. “Didn’t have a lot of spare time but was glad I brought the drone!” The video showed locations across the Dominican Republic, including Bani, Samana and Juan Dolio.
It also showed Pinewood Studios, a production studio located in Juan Dolio known for filming water scenes. This is the second location of the UK-based studio. The facility includes a 60,500 square foot water tank and 35 acres of filming locations that including tropical views. Recent films like The Lost City and Shotgun Wedding also filmed at this facility.
The present-day scenes showing Emily as an adult in New York City were filmed on location in Brooklyn. Tweets from fans show the series lead Alycia Debnam-Carey, who previously starred in Fear the Walking Dead and The 100, filming scenes in Brooklyn across May and June.
Production was spotted mainly around the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn when filming was taking place in 2022.
Saint X premiered this week on Hulu with the first three episodes of the season.
New episodes drop every Wednesday.
